These Carpenters appear to have lived among and intermarried with the Virginia English families, suggesting strong cultural ties, so they likely came from England by way of VA, possibly from one of the tidewater lines in VA since the 1600s. I don't have a complete writeup on this branch -- I update my notes whenever I learn something new -- but here's an outline with more information about your branch:

Benjamin Carpenter, born c1751-1760, died 26 Aug 1829 in Wake Co. NC. He served as a Sergeant in the North Carolina Continental Line during the Revolutionary War from the fall of 1778 through 1781. In 1820 he received 428 acres of bounty land in the Chickasaw Purchase in TN which he sold to Richard Smith of Wake Co. NC. With Samuel Carpenter the heir-at-law of Ensign Solomon Carpenter he received a share of 2,560 acres of land in TN within the limits reserved for officers and soldiers of the Continental Line, which he and Samuel transferred to Richard Smith of Wake Co. NC. (Records in the NC Archives prove that Benjamin and Samuel were brothers of Solomon Carpenter, who was killed in service at Savannah GA in 1777 or 1778.) He applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service and was enrolled in 1826. He married first c1785 to Sally Shackelford, who died in 1787, and second on 25 Aug 1789 in Wake Co. NC to Sally Merritt, who was born c1774 and died after 1839. Extensive depositions were made by some of the Carpenters attempting to connect Benjamin to Dr. Nathaniel Carpenter of England and VA, but no link was proved. His Revolutionary War service pension application and other court documents name the following children:
1. Polly Carpenter, born 1786, died 1797.
2. William Carpenter, born 1787, died c1816.
3. Willie Carpenter, born 8 Aug 1790, served in the War of 1812, did not marry.
4. Charlotte Carpenter, born c1793, died 1828, married on 4 Jan 1810 in Wake Co. NC to Asa Blake.
5. Mary Carpenter, no further information.
6. Thomas Carpenter, born c1800-1810, died 1862, married on 25 Jun 1829 in Wake Co. NC to Nancy Edwards.
7. William Carpenter, born c1803, married c15 Jul 1819 in Wake Co. NC to Martha Robertson.
8. Robert Carpenter, born c1803, died without issue in 1854.
9. Solomon Carpenter, "died without issue in 1821 or 1822".
10. James Carpenter, born c1805-1808, married on 9 Jun 1828 in Wake Co. NC to Abigail Suggs. In 1860, his wife and children were enumerated with other families, but he was not apparent -- they divorced in 1857. In 1880 he was enumerated in Houses Creek township and she was enumerated as Abigail Carpenter with Benjamin A. Watson as mother-in-law. Children:
10a. Mary Ann Carpenter born c1831 in NC, married on 19 Mar 1849 in Wake Co. NC to Robert Jackson Ford, who was born 20 Mar 1820 and died 11 Aug 1913. Mary Ann died 1874, and Robert married third (he had first married on 9 Feb 1844 to Ellen Howington) to Matilda _?_, with whom he had no children.
10b. Jane Carpenter, born c1833, enumerated in her parents' household in 1850.
10c. Martha Frances Carpenter, born c1835, married on 28 Jul 1858 in Wake Co. NC to Thomas Mitchell.
       10d. Marissa Carpenter, born c1842.
       10e. John Carpenter, born c1844.
10f. Sally Carpenter, born c1847-1849, married c1873 to Benjamin A. Watson.
11. Benjamin Carpenter, born c1806, married on 29 Nov 1828 in Wake Co. NC to Nancy Hopson. The 1870 and 1880 censuses show him with a much younger wife Lucretia, who was born c1843-1845 in NC.
