Susan,
I have Roswell listed as one of the son's of Amos and Polly (Gould) Carpenter of Westminster, Windham Co., VT, based on information in The Carpenter Memorial. However, there is no primary proof of Roswell being their son.Circumstancial evidence suggests that he may be: his age is about right; he has a son named Roswell; he came to Northfield from Charlestown NH where a couple of his brothers were living;Roswell is recorded in Northfield in the 1800-1850 census. The census records indicate he may have had children that are not known.According to CM, he had sons Abial, Joseph, Moses and Roswell. In the 1800 census, he has 1 male under the age of 10 in the household. In 1810, he has 2 males under the age of 10. He has 3 females under the age of 10 in the 1800 census and 2 females age 10-16 in the 1810.In the 1830 census, he has 2 males 20-30 and 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 20-30.In the 1850 census, there is a Joseph Carpenter age 43 (b ca 1807) and I wonder if this is Roswell's son?If the census records are correct, Roswell and Louisa had at least the following children:
1 male b 1790-1800
3 females b 1790-1800
2 males b 1800-1810
1 female b 1815-1820
I am interested in the answer to this question about the parents of Roswell because I am a descendant of Amos and Polly (Gould) Carpenter. My research has shown many errors in the information presented in CM for this family.I think that there are a couple of children listed for them that may well be grandchildren, based on the age of Polly Gould (b ca 1725)and Roswell may be one of them.
