In my previous post the reference to St. Charles Co. should have been MO, not MD -- sorry about that.
In the censuses, there is uncertainty about Peter Joseph Carpentier's name, birthdate, and origin: the 1840 shows him as Joseph Carpenter, born c1810-1820; the 1850 has him as James Carpantia, born c1790 in Canada; the 1860 as Peter Jos Carpenter born c1812 in Belgium; and the 1870 as Peter Joe Carpenter born c1808 in Belgium. He appears to have married first c1837 to _?_, who was born c1800-1810 and apparently died c1840-1850, and second to Mary _?_, who was born c1825-1830 in GER [1850], FRA [1860 & 1870], or Elsass {Alsace} [1880].Son Isadore does not appear in the census after 1870, but Louis does appear, with near-identical demographic data. One way to find whether there is a relationship would be through Y-DNA analysis of Carpenter-surnamed male descendants of each line (see Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project page at http://members.cox.net/johnrcarpenter/)http://members.cox.net/johnrcarpenter/).
Have you found them in the 1910 census? The 1900 shows:
Louis Carpentier, Aug 1840, 59, married 14 years, MO FRA FRA, painter
Louemma, May 1869, 31, 7 children born to her & 5 living, MO FRA FRA
Mary A., Sep 1886, 13, MO MO MO
Eliza. J., Jun 1888, 11, MO MO MO
Tillie? I. (dau.), Apr 1890, 10, MO MO MO
Sarah F., Mar 1894, 6, MO MO MO
Frederick I., May 1896, 4, MO MO MO
The third daughter’s name is faded -- do you know who she was?Daughters Rosa and Dora were born 1901 and 1904 per the 1920 census, so she wasn’t either of them.If she wasn’t married by 1910, she should be enumerated with the family.
