Carpenters/Pennsylvania/Ontario/Michigan
I am working on a branch of the Carpenter family that was in Norfolk County, Ontario, until about 1860 when they moved to Marathon, Lapeer County, Michigan.
George N. Carpenter is the father and was born 1810 in Philabelphia.I'm not clear how he ended up in Canada, but he married Jane Cline there in 1844 and they had ten children: Henry E., Augustus C. (A.C.), Peter Cline, Mary J., Maggie J., Mercy L., John Alexander, George N., Rosalie and Lewis B.The first seven were born in Ontario and the last three in Michigan.
We've made a lot of progress going forward but have not connected to ancestors.Among the counties in Michigan involved are Lapeer, Alger (Augustus , Peter and descendants), Schoolcraft, St. Clair and Ingham (John Alexander), Bay (Lewis), and Wayne and the Detroit area after World War I.
John Alexander was my great-grandfather and was an intinerant preacher and sometime inventor.Peter was a hotel keeper (the Carpenter House) and sheriff of Alger County among other things.Augustus owned the hotel with Peter and was "walking boss" for the Chicago Lumber Company in Alger County.Lewis was farming as of 1900. Anyone with any interest or who wishes to share information, please let me know.
