Temple Carpenter, Lawrence Co Mississippi DNA puzzle
I've found a Carpenter puzzle through autosomal DNA at ancestry.com.
My 4th great grandmother, Elizabeth Carpenter, married William C. Newton in Lawrence Co, MS in 1820. Family historians have listed Temple and Hannah Carpenter as her parents, but I found a transcribed copy of Temple's will which listed his Elizabeth and her first and second husbands by name ...neither of which were Newton. Temple's will also states his Elizabeth preceded him in death and my Elizabeth died much later.
So I played with some possibilities using my DNA experimental tree at ancestry.com to find the correct Elizabeth and found that I DNA match Jonathan Carpenter III (of the Still Run VA line) as well as his first wife Nancy Shouse. They had a daughter named Elizabeth born in 1800, so she must be my gggggrandmother Elizabeth. At her wedding, Solomon Carpenter (son of Temple and Hannah) vouched that she was of age 18 suggesting that she was visiting family in Mississippi--her parents were living in Missouri at the time of her wedding. To me, this suggests a close Carpenter connection between Temple and the Jonathan Carpenter Still Run VA line. (There's a book about that Carpenter line by James Carpenter-- Some Descendants of Jonathan Carpenter of Still Run.)
Would love to find descendants of Temple and Hannah who have done autosomal DNA testing at ancestry so we can work on finding this connection.
