Katie, I looked over the 1870 census index several times under all the known "Carnley" spellings and came up blank. It is possible William was listed in someones household, but where? As to the burial of Mary in Beaverdam, I have a book written by Jefferson Albert Carnley in which he states that Mary was buried in Beaverdam Cemetery, and that he had never been able to locate the grave because it was unmarked.

I think my next step would be to diligently search for William on the 1870 census. This will probably help tremendously.
