Several of my cousins and I have been trying to unravel just how the Mississippi Carney’s connect with those of Cheatham/Davidson Counties, TN. As I indicated, four Carney men were well established in Davidson County, Tennessee by the year 1800, viz.: Elijah, Vincent, William, and John (two sisters are also identified by some compilers - Lucy Carney who married John Blackburn and Martha “Patsy” Carney who married Edward Blackburn. It is considered by some that Elijah, Vincent, and William were brothers; John was considerably older and his relationship is unknown. John Carney (Kerney) appeared with the other three in the 1830 census; the household had one male age 80-90, and one female 70-80. John did not appear in any subsequent Tennessee census indicating that he had either died or moved on. Some researchers believe that a John Carney listed in the 1830 Marion, Mississippi, Census was John Carney, Jr., the son of John Carney of Marrowbone identified above. It was indicated that he was born in Tennessee as well as several of his children. One child was Nancy Carney who married Bartholomew (Bartly) Baugh in Davidson County, TN in 1806 and the witness/bondsman was John Blackburn, husband of Lucy Carney Blackburn (when Lucy Carney and John Blackburn married in Davidson County in 1799, John Carney was the bondsman/witness). Mentioned in the will of this Mississippi John Carney was Nancy Baugh, thus establishing she was his daughter. My knowledge on the descendants of Bartholomew and Nancy (Carney) Baugh is limited to just their offspring who I record as Lucretia, Milley Shepherd, John Creat Howzer, William Henry, Martha Ann, Cinderilla, Lillenious, Jincy Curny, Diocietian Hatcher, Attison Shepherd, Samantha Elizabeth, and Bartholomew. I’d be most appreciative of ascertaining whether what I list is correct, and of any info you’d care to share pertaining the Nancy (Carney) Baugh’s descendants.
