Carneys with Custer

Does anyone know anything about the 2 Carneys that were with Geo. A. Custer on that June day in 1876? I think one was James and other was Thomas. One died there and other was wounded--was with either Reno or Benteen--and he was sent to Old Fort Pease to recoup. One was a trumpeter, I believe.
