A biography/family history of John Carney is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2, Image 500. John was born, 3 Apr 1859, to Daniel and Johanna (Brean) Carney. Daniel Carney was born 1814 in County Tipperary, learned the trade of marble cutter, and came to Canterbury CT in 1848. He became a farmer and died in Canterbury in Oct 1888. Johanna Brean was born 1829, County Kerry, IR, and died in Canterbury in Jun 1867. Five children: John; Mary (Mrs. John Savage), d. age 49, Norwich, CT; Timothy, d. age 20, Elizabeth, CO; Daniel, a farmer at Earlville, IL; Johanna, d. age 18. John Carney attended school in Canterbury and at age 17 left his father's farm to learn the butcher's trade at Jewett, CT. He worked there two years until 1876 when he located to do farm work in Mendota, IL. In 1881, he located to Montana as part of the construction forces building the Northern Pacific Railway to Glendive. At Glendive he helped build the roundhouse and railway yards and was made a locomotive engineer, until 1888 when he was run over by a railcar in the Glendive railyards and lost his right foot. In 1890 - 1895, was assigned as engineer in the shops, after which he was transferred to Huntley, MT, where he was in charge of the railroad pumping house. He also owned an irrigated 40-acre farm east of Huntley. On 7 Mar 1917, Norwich, CT, John married Miss Mary E. Archer, daughter of John & Mary (Collier) Archer. Her father was a gunsmith and both parents died in Norwich. John Carney died 11 Apr 1934, age 75 Mary E. Carney died 12 Feb 1929, age 56, Yellowstone County, MT I am not related.
