Carney's in the Stafford Co VA area

Some things to ponder. There appears to be areas of confusion regarding Thomas, John Carney. Some researchers tend think there is one Thomas in the area and one John.
Facts do not support this. So I am writing this up for all to review, maybe someone will come up with more compelling evidence to support the findings and/or will have actual facts to dispel the scenerio as a whole.

Facts that we have: (documentation)

Thomas came to America 1661-1662 apparantly with out family Manokin MD
Thomas records his brand “half moon: 1666
Thomas 1666 appears to be now called Jr. (same man? Or son?)
Thomas 1667 goes back to England, leaves a neighbor with a power of Attorney
Thomas 1677 back in Maryland, has land dealings.

John 1693, in court actions Maryland Also the fact that there are references to Thomas Jr. support that Thomas has family here now.

Robert 1694 Maryland

(We can find remnants of the early Carney family still in Maryland thru the Revolutionary period.)

Thomas & John appear in Westmoreland co. VA 1705-1710

Thomas in 1708 marries Mary Spencer (relict of John Spencer)
John has several court actions 1705/1710, there maybe more we need to review surrounding counties.
Dr. John Carney 1708 Westmoreland
John dies in 1727 (did he have children?)

People in Westmoreland Co VA are same who moved over into Pr. Wm, Stafford, Fairfax and the like.

Thomas in Stafford Co 1729
Mary Carney appears in Stafford co records as a witness, on a will, etc 1731-1735

Frances Carney appears in Stafford co records 1735
John appears land records Stafford 1739
John appears on a record as an indenture servant in Stafford Co. 1739 on a planation
Thomas & Sarah with son John (age of son not named in record) Pr. Wm 1741

John appears in Stafford co. church records with his wife Mary, children 1741-1749

John appears in Stafford land records again 1741-1743

Thomas dies in 1744 Fairfax

John is executor on Thomas’s administrative distribution Fairfax.

Thomas appears on land records 1746-1749 (obviously not the one who died)

John gives deposition 1740 (birth given as 40 years of age abt 1717)

Thomas appear in 1754-1758 Frederick Co. VA

John appears in 1758 Frederick Co. VA There is evidence to show that these two men brothers.

Frances appears on land records with Thomas 1756 Frederick Co. This indicates relationship Father & sons? Or another brother?

John made out his will in 1775 , probated in 1780 stating “to Susannah……. To John, son of Thomas and to Thomas son of Thomas when comes of age (at this time Thomas is a minor). The will indicates John never married and that his brother Thomas has at least 3 children. some have assumed that the Thomas who died in 1744 is this John’s brother. Not so, since Thomas who is mentioned in the will is a minor in 1775 his birth date would have to be much later than 1744. (born in 1744 add 21 years you get birth year 1765)
So we eliminate Thomas of Fairfax as the brother of this John who made a will in 1775.

When you read the document where Thomas (the minor) obtains the land (after becoming of age) and sells the land, you discover that Thomas, (the elder) brother to John held the land for the minor Thomas. Thomas (who was the minor in 1775) now of age, obtained the land from Thomas the elder.. Later in 1793 Thomas (who was the minor 1775) sells the land.
.
John of Berkley (dead 1775/1780) and Thomas his brother, along with Francis Carney are related and not connected (at least not directly) to Thomas of Fairfax 1744 and not to John who appears in Overwhorton Parish records.
At this point I believe John of Berkley & his brother Thomas are the sons of Francis Carney. John, brother to Thomas (who was the minor) married Margaret Floyd and their son PleasantCarney moved back to Botecourt co and later to Indiana.
Thomas, the elder provided help in the Rev War 1780 Botecourt Co. John is thomas the elders executor. What happened to Thomas (who was the minor) Are they part of the W.VA line?

Francis b: 1710
Thomas b: 1732 in Botecourt 1780 provisons given for Rev War effort
               Known children: John b: 1756
Thomas b: 1758 (could be later, minor in 1775)

John b: 1730 died 1775/1780 no children

Now we have a John born 1732 VA who is in Tenn abt 1788
with a Thomas.

Joshua born abt 1728 VA in Stafford Co along with John 1753(overwhorton parish John) & family.
We have a John born 1734/1734 as a preacher 1808 in
the area which later becomes W.VA. Researcher list him as the father of Thomas who ends up in Jackson Co VA
I have more because there are more Carneys in that area at the same time. For now lets see what kind of responses we get from this.

Myrna
