Hi Andrew,
My great grandmother, Meriah Kearney (Carney) also grew up in Accrington but in 1839, many years before your grandfather though. Her father, Thomas was an engraver but Meriah never learned to read or write. Although her birth was registered as Meriah Kearney, on her marriage certificate to Charles Caldwell in 1871 her name changed to Maria Carney. I don`t know if she had any brothers or sisters. She came to Australia in 1880 with her husband and two children Charles (my grandfather) and Martha Ann. There are many decendants here in Australia. I believe they were from Ireland originally but I have no idea where.
