We are currently reclaiming and restoring the cemetery from close to 100 years of neglect.
We have a Kellogg grant and are using students in a service learning experience to remove the cover and do historical/ genealogical research on the people buried there. As far as we know, there are no records on the burials.
The Murphys have a substantial base but no headstone at the point. It is probably buried where it fell off. The Murphy is James, from Aughrim, Co. Wicklow, Ireland (1813-1885). He is listed as a watchman for the railroad in the 1880 census. Two other Murphy families are listed in Fairmont, Hugh and Nicholas. They are also employed by the railroad. When researching internment records at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, I found a number of Murphys who are listed as buried in the "old" cemetery.
We will be continuing this process untill we have reclaimed what we can and have restored the cemetery to the way it may have looked in the 19th century. We will also do a website, so check back periodically for more information.
