Born in Memphis, September 18, 1841, William Watts Carnes entered the U.S. Naval academy in 1857. He resigned shortly before graduation in 1861 to join the Confederate army. He became on ofmost heralded battery commanders in the Army of Tennessee. One day after his 22nd birthday; on Sept. 19, 1863; Captain Carnes and his battery earned their place in history at Chickamauga.
A successful businessman after the war, Carnes was active in the establishment of the Chickamauga National Military Park. He campaigned tirelessly todefend thehistories of Chickamauga and the Chattanooga campaigns from the revisionists. The last efforts coming during the last months of his life in 1932.
Late in life; as a resident of Bradenton, Fla., he was instrumental in the preservation of the Gamble Mansion in Ellenton Florida.
I have an extesive library of information about Carnes and his battery. I reenact with the Clay County Artiller of Middleburg, Fl that portrays Carnes' Battery. Please contact me directly for specific information.
