My Carnells became Cornell. Sometimes I think it was a matter of how the name was being pronounced as to how it was ultimately spelled. There are some in my ancestry who were shown as both Carnell then later Cornell. So I think you did find the right folks and whomever was spelling the last name, county clerk or whomever, just used the spelling they thought was correct.
