Hi Douglas,
I have a James Carnegie Webster (b.25/1/1797)in Angus, Scotland and first thought following Scottish naming protocols that "Carnegie" could have been his paternal grandmother's maiden name. This line of search has currently been friutless.
My line of thinking now is he was possibly named after an influential acquantaince of the family. I then noticed in an email on the Angus Mailing List an entry for a Sir James Carnegie, aged 40, occupation, gentleman on the 1841 Census, County of Forfar, District of Brechin, Parish of Farnell which I understand is just south of Brechin. Does he ring any bells in your line?
Regards,
Geoff Webster
