James Carnegie of Balnamoon--Culloden
James Carnegie of Balnamoon escaped after Culloden. He was a captain in Ogilvy's Regiment.
Two scenarios exist:
1. James; his cousin, George Carnegie, and an Ochterlony of Guynd, escaped from Montrose in a small boat, were picked up by a Swedish ship and carried to Gothenburg. George became a famous and wealthy merchant in Sweden before returning to Scotland in 1765.
James ventured into Holland, was captured, returned to Britain for trial and was acquitted.[This man is said now to have been James Carnegie of Balmachie].
2. James was captured near Balnamoon, sent to London for trial and was acquitted because of an error in names in the indictment.
James re-purchased family estates and died in 1791. His son joined the Swedish branch of the family in business.
Both versions of James's escape have appeared in reputable references. Has anyone checked the records which could show which version is the correct? It makes a difference to me whether James Carnegie of Balnamoon ever left Britain after Culloden.
