This isn't an answer to your question but it caught my eye. Maybe there is a connection?

" Thomas Carneal, 14 May 1793, Lexington, regarding a runaway slave named John Grey who was raised in Caroline county, Virginia." Kentucky Gazette, Vol. VI, no. XXXV, 18 May 1793.

Thomas Carneal is mentioned many times and I am wondering if he was the brother or uncle of Edmond? This is just an excerpt of the original notice.
