Hello, AC
I have always known that my ggrandfather was Willis Carmichael and that he was from Pittsylvania Co., VA. I started the search for his parents on the internet. Of course, there was nothing about Willis so I went to the Library of VA where I found Willis' parents and that he is Timothy's oldest child and had quite a few siblings. William Byrd is one of them. I found a copy of William Byrd's marriage to Lettie Chaney which gives his parents as T.L. Carmichael and Lydia E. Dodson Carmichael. Lettie's parents were Anderson Chaney and Sally White Chaney of Pittsylvania Co., VA. I found William Byrd in North Carolina in the 1900, 1910, 1920 census records and he had married a woman named Nannie Coggins and had a slew of children with her. I always needed to know what happened to Lettie - were they divorced because I found a Lettie Carmichael in census records who died in Lynchburg, VA in 1921. In the 1920 Lynchburg census, there is a Lettie Carmichael, age 64 with 2 daughters and Phoebe Chaney. Phoebe Chaney was the daughter of Lettie's brother William who married William and Willis' sister Araminta (Mecie). I am assuming that this Lettie and Phoebe are part of the Carmichael's of Pittsylvania Co. William Byrd died in 1923 in Raleigh and on his death certificate it looks like he was in the state prison. Haven't been able to confirm that. E-mail me at mfran2@verizon.net if you would like. Sorry about the rambling. Please tell me about your Carmichael connections. Mary
