re: the meaning of the name Carlyon.
The name derives from Brythionic - a linguistic term which encompasses Cornish, Breton and Welsh. The meaning is most probably "hill fort". Carlyon Bay was named after the Carlyon family based at Tregrehan. This particular family of Carlyons, as far as I can ascertain, hails from Old Kea which is a small hamlet between Truro and Falmouth. There are other Carlyon families in Cornwall. You will find in the census of 1881 mention of several families in and around Truro, Falmouth and Helston. Most Australian Carlyons can trace their ancestry to one or other of these families who emigrated in search of better mining!
