Cheers Ted,
I have my Great, great, grandfather John Carlyle, 1813-1874, h/o Lillias Howat, who emigrated from Terregles, KKD, Scotland to New York City, USA in April 1836. His wife Lillias followed him in Jun 1836, when she was pregnant with their first child Lucy Ann b.c. Dec 1839 in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan. In a 1870 Kent County, Michigan biography of John, he states his is the brother of the famous Thomas Carlyle, but we know he was not. Surely he is trying to identify himself with Thomas Carlyle's 1/2 brother John, 1795-1872, who died in Brant Co., Ontario, Canada. This myth has been perpetuated by Robert Carlyle, 1831-1909, the 1st cousin of John Carlyle, h/o Lillias, in a newspaper article c1910 written by Kate McNaughton, that states, that Robert Carlyle, "...knew his uncle well." Of couse this refers to the famous Thomas.
An attempt to verify John Carlyle and his wife, Marg Bent/Benn's short residency in Michigan, do you show when or where John and Marg came to Michigan and returned to Ontario? John was not pleased "...how [Michiganers] celebrated the Sabbath." Plse and thank you John
