Carlyle name during the Battle of Hastings
My Grandfather was Robert Carlyle, born April 18, 1883 in Sandringham, England. In 1966 he received an invitation to the celebration of the Battle of Hastings. All decendents of the solders in this battle received invitations and a book listing all participants. My Grandfather was in a nursing home at the time and my Grandmother died that year. No one knows what happened to the invitation or book. The problem is there were already places with the Carlyle name before the battle. It seems my decendents assumed the Carlyle name from the lands they were given. Does anyone know what the Carlyle name was before the Battle of Hastings?
