I'm sorry to disappoint you, but your Mary Carlyle probably wasn't a sister of Thomas Carlyle. He did have a sister Mary, who was born in 1808, but she married a man by the name of Austin. I've not found any Sinclairs connected with Carlyles in Dumfriesshire, but there was a Mary Carlyle baptised on the 30th December 1799 in the Parish of Hoddom, i.e. Ecclefechan Village. She was the daughter of a John Carlyle (no mother's name given).
We also had a strong tradition of connections with great author, but I have blown a hole right through the middle of it. That was disappointing at the time, but further researches were even more interesting as it turned out.
A word of caution: IGI records are inadequate on Carlyles because many of them belonged to a free church in Ecclefechan whose records, where they exist at all, are very scanty.
Yours, John Carlyle
