Obituary of Finley Carlton

W. Finley Carlton, 87, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at 4:27 a.m. at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The funeral service for Mr. Carlton and his wife, Anne, who died Monday, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Mr. Carlton was born in Davidson County on Aug. 23, 1920, to John Franklin Carlton and Jessie Hawkins Carlton. He was married shortly after graduating from Lexington Senior High School to Anne Swicegood Carlton, and they were married for 67 years. He was a faithful member of Sheets Memorial Baptist Church since 1931 and a veteran of the U.S. Army 63rd Division during World War II. He was a graduate of International Accounting Society and the retired owner of W. Finley Carlton and Associates. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a brother, R. Lewis Carlton.

He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Cook and her husband, Doug, of Mount Airy and Nancy Stallings and her husband, Dr. Davey, of Rural Hall; one granddaughter, Pamela Longworth and her husband, Jim, of Kernersville; and one brother, Dewey Carlton and his wife, Ruth, of Lexington.

The visitation for the Carltons will be 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to charity of the donor's choice.

Obituary of Anne S. Carlton

Anne Swicegood Carlton, 87, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Carlton was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Davie County, the daughter of Henry Arthur and Lillie Estelle Essick Swicegood. She married Finley Carlton of Lexington after her graduation from Churchland High School. Mrs. Carlton was a faithful member of Sheets Memorial Baptist Church for 67 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Swicegood and James Swicegood, and five sisters, Sue S. Swicegood, Irene S. Bailey, Ruby S. Clement, Gertrude S. Shoaf and Magdaline Swicegood.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, W. Finley Carlton; two daughters, Bonnie Cook and her husband, Doug, of Mt. Airy and Nancy Stallings and her husband, Dr. Davey, of Rural Hall; one granddaughter, Pamela Cook Longworth and her husband, Jim, of Kernersville; a brother, H.A. Swicegood Jr. of Danielsville, Ga.; and a sister, Kathryn S. Lakey of Linwood. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and all the caregivers for their kindness and care given Anne during her illness. Also a special thanks to Dr. James Yopp and his staff for their many years of care.

Due to the death of her husband, W. Finley Carlton, on April 09, 2008, Annie's funeral service and burial were delayed until Friday, April 11, 2008, so that both services could be held at the same time.///skw
