With money he made as a farmhand, he paid for a 3-months course in a college in Fargo, ND, in 1911. He came to Montana in May, 1913, and was employed as a yard man for the Piper-Howe Lumber Yard in Joplin, MT. In Jun 1914, he moved to Westby, MT, where he was a bookkeeper for Kulaas Lumber Company. Later the company sent him to Plentywood and to Redstone in 1915. He became a cashier in the bank at Redstone.

On 24 Jun 1915, Minot, ND, Kaare married Miss Bertha Anderson, born Aug 1894, Belgrade, MN, daughter of Andrew and Anna Anderson, both natives of Denmark. Daughter of Kaare and Bertha Carlson: Ada, b. 23 Jun 1916.
