Willard Hoover Carlson was born on March 8, 1932 on the family farm north of Slayton, Minnesota to Oscar and Violet Coyle Carlson. He was raised on the farm, attended country school and Tracy High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 13, 1952 and was honorably discharged on April 2, 1953. Willard returned to Murray County and farmed near Garvin, Minnesota. He married Mavis Wendland on July 19, 1958. They lived near Balaton, Minnesota and a short time in Oregon before returning to a farm near Slayton, Minnesota. They later divorced. Willard also worked as a truck driver for many years.On February 18, 1978, Willard and Jeneta Herrera were married in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in Sioux Falls where Willard was employed as a truck driver for Golden Sun Feeds. In 1993, they moved to their home on Lake Shetek near Garvin, Minnesota. Willard retired in 1994 and then helped his brother Wayne and his nephews on their farms. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on February 18, 2008. Willard passed away on his 76th birthday on March 8, 2008, at the Tracy Sanford Hospital in Tracy, Minnesota. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Garvin. He also was a member of the American Legion in Garvin. Willard loved spending time with family and friends, fishing, watching sports especially golf and the Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting area casinos to play bingo.
Survivors include his wife Jeneta Carlson, Garvin, MN; three children and their spouses: Larry and Carmen Carlson, Clearwater, MN; Keith Carlson, Winthrop, MN; Roger and Kim Carlson, Slayton, MN; two step-children and their spouses: Maria and Larry Jones, Madison, SD; and Robin and Charlie Dawson, Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one brother and his spouse, Wayne and Rosemary Carlson, Slayton, MN; two sisters and their spouses: Wava and Senator Jim Vickerman, Tracy, MN; and Wilma and Charles Gray Sr., Slayton, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Wesley Carlson.
Memorial services were held at the First Congregational Church of Garvin, Garvin, MN on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Edsel Miller officiating. The organist is Dorine Brock with special music by Deb Miller. The honorary pallbearers are Chuck Gray, Steve Vickerman, Kevin Carlson, Terry Carlson, Rick Carlson, Larry Jones, Darwin Towne, Harvey Wendland and Vern Lietz. Interment will be private. Military honor accord by the Garvin American Legion Post.
