From St. Charles (Ill.) Chronicle, 29 August 1902:
Edward Carlson, a citizen of Batavia, met with an accident which may cost him his life. He had evidently been thrown from his buggy as he was driving along he street, and was hurled against a barb-wire fence. The barbs sank deep into his abdomen and great pieces of flesh were torn out. The physician gave little or no hope of his recovery, as the man was very weak from the loss of blood.
