I also have an interest in what I think is the same Carlisle Family. John Carlisle married Jane Matthews (Mathis) in Hall Co (I have a date somewhere) On the 1850 Hall census Dist 38 (#94) Robert age 57, wife M, age 48 and family,(95) James age 24, wife M. age 28, (96) JOHN CARLISLE AGE 32, WIFE JANE AGE 35 AND FAMILY, followed by William age 30....I didn't copy the next page.
In latter census in John & Janes household is an Older Martha Matthews listed as aunt....(I think this is the same Martha that was living in Forsyth Co in Margaret Matthews age 70 household) next to my GGGG-Grandfather James Matthews (Mathis).
I also have Bethel Baptist Church Records (just across the Chattahoochee River from Hall) in Forsyth Co that lists several Mathis/Matthews and Carlisles family members and a mention that (I beleive...it's been awhile since I dug through this stuff) Jane transferred her letter to Bethel Baptist from Mt. Salem. I just found Mt. Salem (founded 1818) just south of Flowery Branch in Hall Co.
OK....having typed all of this, I realize that there are many holes to be filled in. But I think Jane (Matthews-Carlisle) is somehow related to my "brickwall" James Mathis.
I have noted that at several Carlisle's are buried in Forsyth and a few Mathis's in Hall. Before Lake Lanier was built in the 1950s the Hall/Forsyth river crossing of the Old Federal Rd was very near Flowery Branch & Mt Salem in Hall Co and Bethel in Forsyth Co.
I now live in Forsyth Co.....maybe we could combine forces and help each other??
Thanks,
Van Mathis
