William Carlisle 1764 - 1843 NC, KY, TN: mother ?
In William Carlisle's pension application for service in the Revolution, he says he was born in Guilford County NC November 18, 1764.He says that he entered the militia from Surry County NC in 1780 subsituting for Moses Hazel, his stepfather. (Yes, he would have been only 15 years old and though he collected the pension for a while, it was later denied his widow on these grounds.)There is a Moses Hazlett who married a Rachel Campbell in Guilford, NC on Feb 29, 1772.Moses Hazlett is listed in Surry County in 1782 tax list and in Surry county in 1790 and 1800 under the spelling Hazle.(In William Carlisle's pension record the name is spelled Hazel.)Is it possible that Rachel Campbell was Rachel Carlisle Campbell, mother of William by an earlier marriage? The dates seem to work and there were extensive Campbell/Carlile/Carlisle connections in Augusta and Bath Counties in Virginia, but I haven't been able to make the link. Can anyone help out?
