Ann:My Fitzsimmons (then Fitzsimons) family emigrated from Ireland in 1847.I don't know what was their path or how long it took them, but they went to Jo Daviess County, Illinois and were there for two years, then crossed the Mississippi River to Fayette County, Iowa, and were there in 1868 according to a plat map of Clermont Township that a cousin found and sent to me.I know Jo Daviess County was a region of lead mines that employed many Irishmen.
I am in touch with another Fitzsimmons whose County Cavan ancestor (James "Jim" Fitzsimons, b. between 1808 and 1816, d. 1871) entered the United States in 1846 and settled as a farmer in Franklin County, NY near Malone. Some of his family went to Wisconsin then to North Dakota. One of his grandchildren was a James Carlin (1883-1920).
Two of my grandfather's female Fitzsimmons cousins married in Iowa and went to North Dakota. For that matter, I also lived in North Dakota for 20 years!
Getting back to Peter Carlin, I took out the plat map of 1868 for Clermont Township, Fayette County, Iowa and found that "P. Carlin" owned land in Section 19, and it looks like there was a school in the southeastern part of that Section. The 1879 map shows P. Carlin, J. Carlin and L. Carlin each with 80 acres in that same Section, and the school is School No. 5, but it seems to be across the road from L. Carlin's land. The 1896 map shows Lawrence Carlin has 254.67 acres and P. Carlin 78 3/4 acres in Section 19.L. Carlin is shown as owning 47.30 acres just north in the southwest quarter of Section 18.The school now is shown in Section 20
In 1974 when I first visited Clermont, I met Will Carlin, who showed me the location of St. Peter's Cemetery and said that two Fitzsimmons girls married and went to North Dakota.
