Thanks for looking. Brittain had died before 1840, but the family was in the 1840 Dale County, Alabama census with Dorothy as head of household - Dolly Nickols. Once they arrived in Louisiana, the spelling changed to Nichols, or the spelling in AL was misspelled.

I'm not sure why she went to Hopkins County, Texas either. All of the Nichols family that came from Alabama settled in SW Louisiana. As far as I know, she was the only one that went to Texas, she had her youngest son with her. When she died a couple family members rode to Hopkins County to bring back Britton Jr.

I am thinking she had Carlile family in the Hopkins area, but don't know who.
