Need Help
I am hoping that I found Thomas Carlile, the son of James Carlile and Mariah Whitcraft, and need help from someone, or anyone who may know more about this Carlile family. Thomas was born about 1834/35 in or around Tuscarawas Co., OH, and I have him listed with the family in the 1850 Scott Co., IN Federal Census, Vienna Twp.
I can't find Thomas in 1860, but did find a Thomas and Lucretia Carlin (at least it looks like Carlin on the census record and is indexed by Ancestry as Carlin) listed in the 1870 Crawford Co., IL Federal Census, in Martin Twp. I am confident that this Carlin family is really the Thomas and Lucretia Carlile family. My reasoning is as follows:
Lucretia Naugle (Nagle?) born about 1838/39, first married Oliver Wilson Huston, in Washington Co., IN on 4 Jan 1857 (Indiana Marriage Index - Book F Page 428) and they had two sons, Samuel B. and Charles N. Huston. The Huston family is listed in the 1860 Federal Census in Washington Co., IN Gibson Twp. I am told that Oliver W. Huston died on 11 Feb 1866 and is buried in the Franklin Cemetery, Washington Co., IN.
I then found a marriage between Thomas Carlile and Lucretia Huston on 12 Jan 1866 in Washington Co., IN (Indiana Marriage Index - Thomas Carlile - Lucretia Huston Book G Page 474). I realize the date of death that I have for Oliver Huston is Feb 1866, a month after the marriage date of Lucretia and Thomas, but there may be a good explanation for that, either Oliver and Lucretia divorced before he died, or, more probably, the dates are a year off and Oliver died in Feb of 1865. Or, perhaps I mistyped the month and the marriage date was in Jun of 1866.
In any event, in checking the 1870 Census of Crawford County, the two children of Lucretia and Oliver are listed and living with Thomas and Lucretia Carlin. Although their last names are spelled incorrectly (looks like Hustian), the given names and ages of the boys are accurate, so this Lucretia and Thomas in Crawford Co., IL must be the Lucretia and Thomas Carlile who married in Washington Co., IN.
Now, my problem, or problems, and the reason I am asking for help.
In the 1870 Crawford Co., IL census, there are 4 other Carlin (Carlile) children, who appear to be the children of Thomas by a prior marriage, and, of course, I have no record of a prior marriage for Thomas. The listed children are:
Clarissa B. Carlin (Carlile)Born about 1857/58
John H. Carlin (Carlile)Born about 1859/60
James W. Carlin (Carlile)Born about 1861/62
Alexander Carlin (Carlile)Born about 1863/64
Then there are two children which appear to be Thomas and Lucretia's:
Richard A. Carline (Carlile)Born about 1867
Albert M. Carline (Carlile)Born about 1868
Unfortunately I cannot find the Thomas and Lucretia family, or any of them individually, in the 1880 census.I was able to find Richard and Albert Carlile in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records located in the states of Washington and Oregon.
So the bottom line is:
(1) I need help in either confirming or denying that the Thomas Carlile who married Lucretia Naugle Huston is the son of James Carlile and Mariah Whitcraft.
(2) I need help in locating Thomas and first wife, plus children Clarissa (and possibly John) in the 1860 census.
(3) I need help in locating all or any of them (Wanted Dead or Alive) in the 1880 census.
Any suggestions are also welcome. Thanks.
