Sorry, I should have qualified my statement by saying that these Carll/Carlyle/Carlile spellings in Maine were all linked to the Carley/Kerley spellings of the family in Boston. This family came from Devon,England, to Boston in 1637. Descendents of this family are also found in the South spelled Cearley/Kearley/Kerley after 1750.
Generally the family has been said to be of the Mackintyre clan in Scotland. A William Carley called William Wallace a cousin and was his body guard, murdered before Wallace was taken. The Carleys then spread out of Scotland to the Lake country and south in England and across the Irish Sea. Many Williams!! See dna testing at familytreedna.com (Carley Project)
