I do not think there is any rhyme or reason why the names change. It could be as simple as a census enumerator spelling it as he wanted. My family also moved from Alabama to Texas. I have been to Alabama to do some research and would be glad to share what I have. My 2nd great grandfather was Lewis Edmond Carlile b. February 23, 1853 near Goshen, Pike County, Al. He died February 28, 1920 in Ira, Scurry Co., Tx. Lewis Edmond Carlile had many brother and sisters as well as half brothers and half sisters. Robert H, Jesse S, Samuel, John W, Edward, Mary Polly, Nancy Jane all with Jane Moon. He had Lewis Edmond, Leonard, Needham, Basil, Sarah Jan, and Mary Ann with Gracy Carnley. His father was John Carlile b. about 1803 in Alabama and died 1852 in Hallsville, Pike Co., Al. He married Gracy Caroline Carnley born about 1803 in Alamaba and died July 28, 1895 in Tolar, Hood Co., Tx. They married August 18, 1841 in Pike Co., Al. He also married Jane Moon who died about 1840 in Pike Co., Al. They married October 04, 1825 in Henry Co., Al. John's father is thought to be William Carlile born 1785 in South Carolina. At least my family that came to Texas did not use the "S". Some of Lewis' brothers used the "S". If your people meet my people, we might be able to help each other.
