Jan - I did a quick check on where Persis and Jonathan's children were born and I find 2 of them born in Camden in early 1800s. My Carleys were also in Camden but I'm not certain when they first arrived there. I know they were there by the 1820 Census but that was long after the Meekers had left. My g4gf was Albert A. Carley - he was born in Wilton in the 1750s, don't have the exact date, and his brother Johnathan Carley was also born there in 1757. Albert was married in 1777 in Frederickstown, Dutchess to Hannah Covey and in 1790 he and his family were in Ballston, Saratoga/Albany Co. From 1800 to 1820, or just prior, they were in Palatine Twp., Montgomery, NY. Albert's oldest son Abraham married in 1802, and in 1810 they were in Johnstown. The family moved to Camden sometime between 1810 and 1820. Albert's next to last child, my g3gm Adeline Carley married Ezekiel Cady in Annsville/Camden in 1818 and her brother William went into the stove making business with Ezekiel, brother John farmed and Albert and Hannah lived with him until Albert died in 1821. The Carleys stayed in Camden until into the mid 1830s. Abraham had moved into Hector by then, Ezekiel and Adeline left for IL in 1837 and by 1840 the family had pretty much dispersed. Those that stayed went into Hector. If we could figure out why your family went to Camden, perhaps we can discover more about them. What did Jonathan do for a living? Going back in your Meeker line I see the name Smedley and I know they cross the Carley line a couple of times - a Ruth married a Samuel Carley in the 1780/90s and his brother Gerardus married her sister Rebecca. These brothers were the sons of a Joseph Carley and Anjelica Quackenbush and Cornelius, one of Angelica's cousins, married Albert's daughter, Rhoda. Then, of course, Abigail Smedley was married to Jonathan's gf Robert Meeker.
The naming pattern for Albert's sons is pretty straight forward Old English style - Abraham for his father, John for his grandfather, William for his ggf and James for his wife's father with a Cyrus thrown in for good measure.
One of Abraham's sons was John Krum, another Abram W (West?) and a there was a Brookins James further down the line who had a son David Henry West Carley. So there is a certain amount of similarity in the names, if told to guess, I'd say the Persis and Albert were at least 2nd or 2nd once removed cousins - and bearing in mind that Albert also had Meeker blood, I think there's stuff in here that needs to be looked at more closely. - Judy
