I also thought it was German, but recently found that one of my ancestors (Kirkhoff) immigrated from HOLLAND via Switzerland in 1799. I contacted some people in Denmark and find that it is more common in HOLLAND, DENMARK, ENGLAND. I was surprised. However, my family claims our heritage is German. Several spellings - Kirchoff, Kerchoff, Kerkoff, Kerkof, Kurchof, Kurchoff, Kirkof.
