Kirkhuff to Carkhuff Name change

Interested family relatives!
Two things:
1.I was browsing on the net at this site:
http://raub-and-more.com/stjamesepis/stjames2.html

which lists the baptisms of St James Episcopal Church in NJ. Many of the Kirkhuff family members are listed. It was interesting to note that in 1815; Abraham and Anna "Kirkhuff" brought their child for baptism and then in 1819 they are listed again only this time as Abraham and Anna "Carcuff". Anyone know why they changed their name?
2: My gg grandfather John Lawler Kirkhuff moved his family in the late 1800's to Nickerson Kansas. I have found other evidence of other Kirkhuff, Carkhuff families in Nickerson. Does anyone else on this forum have families from Nickerson? And did your families migrate to Kansas about the same time?
