A biography of Frank Carey is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 842. The grandfather, Matthew, and the father, Nicholas, were natives of County Wicklow, Ireland. Frank Carey was born, 28 Sep 1878, one of thirteen children of Nicholas and Mary (Emerson) Carey. Matthew Carey brought his family to the US in 1847 and settled in Albany, NY. Nicholas was born in 1831, grew up in Albany, and in 1863 established a home and a mercantile at Adobetown, MT. He also operated a freightline between Adobetown, MT, and Corine, UT. Nicholas died in 1906. Mary Emerson Carey was born 1854, Omaha, NE, and came with her parents to Virginia City, MT, in 1864. After the death of Nicholas, Mary bought a ranch near Sheridan. Frank Carey was educated in the public schools of Adobetown. From age 12 until 1894, he was a cowboy working for several well-known cattle outfits. In June 1894, Frank went to work for a mercantile company, Henry Elling and Company, at Sheridan. In 1896, he established a grocery store. After two years, he returned to the Henry Elling Company and remained there until March 1906. At that time, he bought an interest in the J.M. Madison department store. He was also town clerk of Sheridan. In June 1911, Butte, MT, Frank married Miss May Lyden, daughter of P.J. and Annie (Martin) Lyden, residents of Butte. Carey children: Lyden (b. 17 Mar 1912); Alice Catherine (b. 14 Feb 1919). I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
