Absolom H. Carey (1831-1912) a goldminer and native of New York, he came to Florida from New Zealand in 1883. He first operated an orange grove. But, after losing his fortune from investments in phosphate mines, he was forced to go back to work as the manager of the Southern Fertilizer Company.

He married in Australia in 1856 to Dorette (1836-1906), a native of Germany. They had at least 2 daughters:

1. W. Clutha Carey-Boardman (1863-1942)

2. Frances J. Carey-Allen (1874-1966).
