The House of Cardona did not originate in a French Royal Family who settled in Cardona in the 9th century, as it is ussually said. Cardona was an important military fortress in the County of Ausona (Osona), but was not the seat of any dynasty. Its ownership changed entirely serveral times. There was no «House of Cardona» until the 12th century, when Cardona was given to the Catalan Prince Bernat Amat = Bernat Imat = Bernat Isamat = Bernard Isambart, whon died in 1151, and was Count of Tarragona (as Bernard II) and Vicount of Ausona (as Bernard I). The city of Tarragona was held by the Counts of its name for a short period of time in the 11th century, as it was recaptured by the Arabs very soon. The Countof Tarragona who received the castle of Cardona made it his capital, uniting the County of Tarragona and the Vicounty of Ausona under the sole name Cardona. He was the founder of the House of Cardona. For more information check a reply which I posted recently in this Family Forum.
