My maiden name, Cardon, is a spelling variation on Cardona. My Cardons were Waldensians or Vaudois, wholived originally in Provence region of France. When an edict was issued to exterminate the Waldensians and other Protestant "heretics" the Cardons and other Waldensians were out of France and into the Piedmont Valleys of Italy.
Over the centuries they tried to live in peace, and enjoy religious freedom, but many times were forced to leave their homes in the Piedmont valley into Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England, and some emigrated to South America.Histories of the Waldensians show many left Europe and settled in Uraguay and other parts of South America.I can only think our families somehow link up back in Europe, as I see a lot of Cardons and Cordonas extracted from vital records on the IGI (International Genealogical Index) published on the internet under www.FamilySearch.organd if you believe your family is part of this Waldensian group, you can find an excellent web site put out by the Piedmont Families Organization at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~waldense/http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~waldense/
They have taken my particular Cardon line back into the 1500's, and will soon publish on their web site the results of extracting the Notarial Records found for Waldensian families in Piedmont valley of Italy.Good researching!
