Hallo Helen ::::

Both very surprised and very pleased.

To have made contact with my 2'nd Cousin once removed !

Really enjoyed your email.

I know what you mean about old family stories

Over time slipping away from us.

And I would enjoy swapping some of them with you

But for now I thought, I could pass along

Some things that I have found up till now

Please see the attachements below

Which might assist you in your further internet searches.

The first is a family history completed by Gary Carroll.

As you will see two of the Carroll family sisters

Ann and Susan Carroll married the two Cardiff brothers

Thomas and John.

The former Tom Cardiff being the father of your Grandfather
Ambrose St Clair, and my Greatgrandmother Mary Susan.

The second document is an extract from the PEI 1841 Census.

Showing the farmer's John Cardiff family living on Lot 48
( Just outside, a little east of Charlottetown proper )

Interestingly, it definately shows that John and his Wife were both born in Ireland.

Which as you already wrote.

Is information that

Would have settled alot of Late Saturday Nite

Canadian Club induced arguments.

In both in your family and mine.

It also shows that John and his Wife paid their own passage from the old county. Which I hear was not often the case.

The 1841 Census shows John as having only one son, who was listed as being aged under 16 years.

This must be the Thomas Cardiff who in the Carroll family history, is listed as the father of both sons Thomas and John Cardiff.

Thomas seniors wife was named Bridget Flood, who as you tipped me off on,also came from a brickyard owner family, apparently living next door to the Cardiffs.(Found that in the 1881 Business Directory for PEI Lot 48).)

Next is the 1881 Census, which shows the both Cardiff brother families as living on Lot 48.

In the next census 1891, Tom Cardiff must have moved his family to Stellarton NS, because only John's family shows
as still living on Lot 48.

By the 1901 PEI Census, the Cardiffs must have left PEI, because there shows no entries under this name for in the whole of PEI

(Could that be correct to your information?)

Maybe you canh ave a look at this stuff see whether it makes any sense to you?

One interesting other point which you raised earlier.

My father also spoke about having Daley cousins in Stellarton.
And I can swear that he mentioned the name Mark Daley to me.

I have to really agree with you and your brother

That Stellarton NS, is an amazing place with some amazingly real people

Just like your brother's recent experience.

Some years ago

I asked a young teenager who worked there in the local Coal Miner's Museum in Stellarton.

Whether he had ever heard of the Martin family of Stellarton.

Said almost immediately, Angus Peter Martin ?

ie Mary Cardiff's husband

He then pointed out to me an old photograph hanging near the museum entrance.

And said, he is up there with the other Draeger Men, who where the mine rescue squad for the Forde Pit.

And sure enough there was old Angus Peter

True Story ! Just, like you said absolutely amazing.

Please let's stay in touch

And see what more info we can exchange & sort out

So, Take Care for Now :::: Norman
