Hallo Helen ::::

Many, many thanks for your reply !

Yes ,I believe that we are from the same Cardiff family

Being your Grandfather Ambrose St Clair and my Greatgrand-mother, Mary Susan Cardiff, apparently were brother& sister.
Both children of Thomas Cardiff & Ann (Carroll)Cardiff.
Their Grandparents were Thomas Cardiff and Bridget Flood.

Their other brothers & sisters in the family appear to be :: Bridget Ann, Edward or Edmund ?, Thomas, and John

Both Mary Susan b.1878 and Ambrose St Clair b. 1881 left PEI, between 1881 and 1891 Census , when they were both still children , settling in Stellarton NS

Mary Susan Cardiff married my Greatgrandfather Angus Peter
Martin, and emigrated from Stellarton NS, 19 April 1927 to Carbondale,Pennsylvania.Family worked,as did in Stellarton, down in the coal mines. Later all moving to New York City

I believe that my Grandfather Michael Augustine ( Gus ) Martin, and your Dad ,John David Cardiff must have been first cousins. I guess that would make Gus's son my Dad, Clifford Augustine ( 1921-1975) and yourself, to be second cousins ?

My father always spoke highly of the Cardiff family of Stellarton, and his Grandmother and still had many fond memories of them from his childhood.

I have very clear memories of my Greatgrandmother Mary Susan
Cardiff who was a very good Catholic, and a very keen supporter of Ireland and the Irish Cause. She had 7 sons and 5 daughters and the tales of some of the family's New York Irish Saint Paddy's Day celebrations, are almost legendary.

Have you ever come across anyone else with a Cardiff/Martin
background ?

Whenever I am with my Irish friends I ask them if they ever heard of Cardiff's in Ireland.Not a very common Irish name, but I did read in the London Daily Mail. That Cardiff in Wales, was really named after a Northern Irish Engineer,who designed and built the towne's coal harbor facilities.

Have you heard anything on that one?

Would be really happy, and look forward to exchanging any additional Cardiff Family info with you.

Kind Regards :::: Norman
