Claude Ambrose Cardew (b. 1870) was on the Pioneer Column from Cape Town to Salisbury in 1890. He was one of the first 32 BSAP (British South African Police). He then went with Harry Johnson (Fort Johnson fame) to Nyasaland. Unfortunately he was murdered (panga) in 1959. He has been referred to as the "father of Nyasaland". Was involved in intelligence gathering during both wars. Retired 1918. Suggest contact National Archives in(now) Harare (they have records of his Rhodesian service and entitled medals). Also Malawian Archives in Zomba (I think). Best of luck. He was a very important person in those parts.
