The right to use the Cardew coat of arms and crest
Posted by: Anthony Cardew (ID *****5387) Date: December 28, 2006 at 08:34:47

the Grant of Arms states that the Arms are granted for the use of Cornelius Cardew and all his male descendants whether eldest son or not. Those are the usual terms on which arms are granted. Female members of the family are entitled to use the Crest (a cross calvary or with a snake entwined proper) and to display the arms in a lozenge but not on a shield. By convention, females who have married into the family are entitled to use both the Crest and the arms in a lozenge (should they have a suitable place to use them, which is unlikely given the obsolescence of horse drawn carriages).
