hello richard, the name CARDEW is indeed pronounced as the previous message tells you, i have it as an original celtic cornish name which translates as 'DARK FORT or CAMP'. there is a scottish variant spelled CARDU (as in the wiskey) and pronounced the same.
as for the spelling of the name of the person you have, you must realise that in days gone by, not everyone was literate and if asked their name for such as a wedding ceremony, birth registration etc. then it would be written as it sounded the the person filling in the register.
i have a comprehensive history of the CARDEW family so if i can be of any help then please just ask.
