Nicolas de Cardenas: I believe the surname Cardenas has been identified by the Holy Office of the Catholic Church of Spain as a Sephardic (Spanish Jews) surname. You can also find this information at www.sephardim.com. I also believe they trace back to 9th Century Sicily, where they migrated from to Spain following persecution.
