Since posting the original message and doing further research, it appears the Carden family referred to in the original posting are the same family members. The census records were posted in Roanoke VA, but the countie where the Cardens lived was Halifax County where the towns of Scottsburg and Clover Virginia are located. There were many black Carden families in the area according to 1880 census. The 1850 and 1860 slave census identified a planter named John B. Carden who owned 20 slaves, 9 males and 11 females. There were black families that spelled their names as "CARDIN". the plantation was located on land along Key Fork on Boston Road in the Wilmoth tract, as identified in deed book 66, page 507 in Halifax Co, VA (1873). The planter Carden's family was also listed in the 1870 census, page 697.
