Many of the "places" to which you refer could actually be the same place.

Re Goochland Co., Virginia

Cumberland broke off from Goochland in 1749

Powhatan broke off from Cumberland in 1777

Therefore, all three of these were once "Goochland". Your families may not have moved at all--the name of their area changed.
