Hello Martha, Let me see if I can answer your questions. James Carden and Sarah DePriest were married Nov. 28, 1782 in Powhatan County. Remember, Powhatan is adjacent to Goochland County. James had a nephew also named James who married Elizabeth White 1791 in Powhatan County. I believe he moved to Green County, Kentucky. James’ and Sarah’s children were: Robert DePriest Carden, born 1783. He moved to Montgomery County and married Jenny Howry there 3-7-1808. His middle name is uncertain. He is well documented in Montgomery County. He is my 3rd great grandfather. I know that for fact. Most all of the Cardens in Montgomery and Pulaski Counties are descended from him, and there are a bunch of them! Joseph Carden, born 1784. He married Judith Kenner in Botetourt County 9-13-1811. Randolph DePriest Carden, born 1785. He married Frances Pierce in Culpepper County 1-3-1812. He is on the 1830 and 1850 census in Campbell County. John Carden, born 1802. He married Elizabeth Smith in Charlotte County in 1823. Our friend, Betty Jane Carden Tago is descended from John. You asked if James Carden could have married more than once. I just don’t know. It is however strange John being born in 1802 after a gap of 17 years since the last child was born. Sarah must have been of age 21 when she was married, so she would have been 41 when John was born. Also, I lose track of James Carden after about 1787. He apparently owes taxes on the estate of Richard Randolph in Cumberland County (also adjoining Goochland County) in 1787. You also asked if James Carden could have been connected with James who married Judith Kenner. I don’t know. I have looked and looked for a James Carden who would fit here, but I have come up empty. You probably wonder why I have spent so much time on this James Carden. Well, his grandson Randolph Perry recalled our Carden family history and passed it on to his son Charles McCanlas who recorded it. Charles was my 2nd great-grandfather. I feel comfortable with our family lineage back through James’ grandfather. Regards, Nils Notify Administrator about this message?
