Hello Barbara
I am sorry to say I do not know who james callaway capps is for sure.At this point I don't see that anyone does really.there are a lot of theories but little hard evidence either way.
there are some that that say he was the son of Silas Capps. This Silas was the son of Willis Capps.(there were several silas's)
However I have found no hard proof of anything.I think the problem for one thing is that in all the writings of the capps that have been circulated nothing is even mentioned about Your James.
However I am sure he is connected to Hiram early on.They both named their children with the names of Vineyard and Proctor and they both traveled together. He is quite a bit younger than Hiram and some had thought he might be Hiram's son not Silas's.However with your marriage information that doesn't work either.
Were did you get the information on Vineyard Bates Capps?I have never found much on him.He had some land in AR entered the military and died.that is all I have on him.
Here is the only documented information I have on your line.
James entered the military during the civil war Feb. 4, 1863, into Co. I 1st. Arkansas Inf.
at his time of enlistment he was described at age 43,5'10, hair dark, complexion fair, eyes blue,

James C. Capps appears on an 1880 census report, Jasper, Cawford co. Ark, Listing his parents born in Geogia. Haveys parents in Kentucky.
information on Marilla is found as such from the Baptist Church Records:
Marilla A. Capps. daughter of Callaway and Hovia Capps, and a native of Missouri.
She is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and the mother of four children:
Biddie M.,
Rosa M.,
Minnie A.
Naomi A.
Marilla married Mr. Trewhitt
""I might add that on the 1880 census he list his parents as being born in GA.Somewhere I remember that David Kenny Capps wrote a document (he wrote several) that mentioned some of our capps going to GA.If I where you I would look for that information and see if you are not connected through that small branch, that might help""
I will see if I have anything else.sorry I could not help you I know how frustrated you must be to have someone so close without any good connections
